Can you imagine it: a world without extraneous packaging, overflowing landfills, and overconsumption? Living a zero-waste lifestyle is one path you can take towards living more sustainably, but the task can often feel overwhelming. Here are three things to keep in mind if you want to start living a zero-waste lifestyle:

Start where you are.

You don’t need to feel pressured to go zero waste overnight. Great things take time. Start by paying attention to what kind of trash you generate on a regular basis. Once you become aware of the types of things that you frequently throw away, you can begin to find creative ways to reduce, repurpose, or recycle.

Use what you have.

You don’t need to spend a fortune purchasing new products to achieve your zero waste goal. In fact, it requires the opposite. Zero waste living challenges our resourcefulness. It makes us be creative with the things we already have around the house and in our communities. That old t-shirt with one too many pizza sauce stains? You can cut it up into rags to use for cleaning around the house. Your wallet and the planet will appreciate it.

Do what you can.

You may not have access to zero waste shops, municipal composting, or even recycling in your town. Depending on where you live, you’ll have different challenges in the process of pursuing a zero-waste lifestyle. Take it one step at a time. Try not to get overwhelmed and instead focus on making progress instead of achieving perfection.
